The control unit is the brain of the system. If it malfunctions, it doesn’t matter how good the motor, rack, or remote control is — the gate either won’t move or will behave unpredictably. The problem is that, in many cases, the control unit itself isn’t faulty. The issue lies in how it was wired. And that’s something entirely preventable.
1. Improper Power Supply or Missing Neutral Connection
Many forget that a control unit doesn’t tolerate voltage fluctuations the same way a motor does. If the 230V supply isn’t stable or the neutral line isn’t properly connected, the controller may malfunction, freeze, or keep restarting. This is especially common where power is supplied from multiple phases and grounding or shared neutral wiring isn’t properly handled. A good installer always starts with a multimeter.
2. Power Surges and Electrical Induction
Lightning, sudden outages, and long cable runs can all generate surges that damage sensitive control components. Solution: surge protection and shielded cables. And no — this isn’t only an industrial issue. It can just as easily happen at a residential gate at the end of a long driveway. Once it happens, experienced installers never skip protection again.
3. Incorrect Wiring of Photocells and Other Sensors
Photocells typically operate with NO (Normally Open) or NC (Normally Closed) contacts. If wired incorrectly, the controller may fail to detect them or switch to error mode. The customer only sees one thing: “the gate doesn’t work.”
A wrongly connected sensor can even disable the entire system. Always check polarity and confirm that the input responds properly.
4. Messy Cabling and Interference-Prone Layout
If every cable is crammed into a single conduit — power lines, control wiring, and the radio receiver antenna all running together — interference is inevitable. It may not appear immediately. Maybe only after rain, in cold weather, or when nearby radio frequencies cause disruption. Poor cable organization is a time bomb.
5. Skipping Essential Initial Setup
Most modern controllers are learning systems. End positions must be programmed, automatic closing time configured, sensitivity adjusted, and more. If these steps are skipped, the system won’t function properly — or will behave unpredictably.

- The system keeps recalibrating itself
All of this can be avoided with a bit of attention.
